COVID-19: Protecting the most vulnerable

Posted on: April 3, 2020

We must protect the most vulnerable.

Some people are at greater risk from being seriously ill from COVID-19.  These include people who have compromised immune system, seniors, people in long-term residential care homes, and people experiencing homelessness.  In addition, front line workers are at a greater risk.

Winnipeg’s shelter system and Food Security Systems have taken on a tremendous amount of work implementing safety measures, social distancing and creating new systems where and when needed.

With the work of End Homelessness the shelter system has worked to transition people ensuring room for those who need more room including isolation capacity.

Winnipeg Harvest with the help of Community Services and other community partners like Broadway Neighbourhood Centre are making sure that Winnipeggers who need it have access to healthy food.

If you live in a long-term care home, additional measures have been taken as well to protect you, and restrict visitors.

Healthcare workers, transit drivers, grocery store employees, Fire and Paramedic Service, Winnipeg Police Service, and all other essential service workers are working non-stop, around the clock to keep us safe now and always.  They have seen increased safety measures in their workplaces.

In order to protect our front-line workers we must do our level-best to stay home.

Staying at home is not easy.

Many people are experiencing ups and downs in facing the pandemic.  If you are feeling pressured and stressed and need help this update is to provide numbers and emails that you may want to explore.
