Calm Compliance for Code Red

Mayor Bowman stood in front of cameras and thanked front line workers and answered questions regarding the city’s response.  He asked Winnipeg to stay calm and comply with provincial health orders.

For a minimum of two weeks, starting Monday November 2nd, the following measures are coming into effect:

  • Bars and restaurants will be closed except for take-out and delivery.
  • Most retail capacity will be reduced to 25 per cent or five people, whichever is higher (not including employees). Food and pharmacy are exempt and remain at 50 per cent capacity.
  • Sports and recreation programming will be suspended.
  • Private gyms and fitness centres will have reduced capacity to 25 per cent and masks will be mandatory, even when exercising.
  • Movie theatres and concert halls will close.
  • Personal services (PDF) such as hair and esthetic salons, massage therapy, tattoo and piercing studios, and laser clinics remain at 50 per cent capacity.
  • Other restrictions including mandatory mask use in indoor public places remains in place.

The City clarified that effective Saturday, October 31, we are suspending all of our recreation and leisure programs and services, including Leisure Guide programming, and closing all City-owned and operated fitness and leisure centres, gyms, indoor pools, arenas, and libraries until further notice.

In addition, the Council Building is also closed to members of the public and City Hall wedding ceremonies are also being suspended until further notice.

As Chair of Protection, Community Services, and Parks, I was immediately in contact with Winnipeg Harvest – assuring them that key community and neighbourhood centres would continue their essential human and food security work.  If any ward resident has time to volunteer with Winnipeg Harvest - please get in touch with me as soon as possible!

The City business continuity, city services, and other essential human security and food security services need to go on uninterrupted.  We need to be there for all Winnipeggers.

At this time, you need timely information.  As your city councillor, I am committed to ensuring we take these moments and build a more resilient Winnipeg.  If you have any questions today or over the coming weeks, please contact me: 204 986-5878.  In the meantime, I join the Mayor in asking you to calmly comply.
