COVID-19: Taking Action to Save Lives

Posted on: April 3, 2020

Taking action now will save lives!

Over the past few weeks, the City of Winnipeg has taken a series of steps to encourage health, wellness and limit transmission of COVID-19.  The series of steps include closures.  It also involves opening active transportation routes, quick access to local business staying open, and maintaining essential services that Winnipeg counts on everyday.

Closures & Cancellations

In order to protect Winnipeg in the last few weeks your city has:

  • Closed all city-owned play structures and picnic shelters
  • Closed all city-owned and operated recreation centres, pool, and libraries
  • Cancelled Leisure guide programming
  • Postponed Spring/Summer leisure guide registration
  • Suspended all non-essential in-home appointments (residential and commercial property inspections)
  • Suspended wedding ceremonies and other non-essential city services like public archives visits.
  • Suspended all permits and special events and festivals until the end of June.

Active Routes & Curb side pick-up

Recognizing that physical distancing requirements still need to consider health, mental health and wellness of citizens the city has expanded its annual bicycle and active transportation routes:

  • Lyndale Drive – Cromwell Street to Gauvin Street
  • Scotia Street – Anderson Avenue (at St. Cross Street) to Armstrong Avenue
  • Wellington Crescent – Academy Road (at Wellington Crescent) to Guelph Street
  • Wolseley Avenue – Raglan Road to Maryland Street

The routes are effective Monday, April 6th and will be in place daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The City will re-evaluate at the beginning of May to determine if the designation needs to be extended.

Please continue to socially-distance the equivalent of an adult hockey stick (2 metres) between people!

For safety sake, it is important to note that these roads are not closed. Cyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution and continue to follow the rules of the road.

To support essential businesses staying open locally the city has moved to increase quick access with safety in mind by:

  • creating temporary curbside pick-up locations set up throughout the downtown and the Exchange District.
  • One hour free parking at all parking metres has been granted.

During this time, the City of Winnipeg will continue to provide essential services, including:

  • Emergency response (Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, Winnipeg Police Service)
  • Winnipeg Transit (With increased cleaning)
  • Working with End Homelessness & Winnipeg’s Shelter System
  • Water services (Drinking water, stormwater and flood mitigation efforts)
  • Waste management (Garbage, Recycling)

Our goal as a city is to reduce transmission, to help keep people safe, and to save lives.

I know we will rise to this challenge, and continue to be the kind of city that takes care of one another!
