Strategic Investments Deliver Recreation Improvements

Sam Southern Arena, Earl Grey Playground and Wildwood Park Receive Targeted Funding

One of my greatest responsibilities is ensuring available funding is used strategically to accelerate projects and maximize investments in our neighbourhoods.

By leveraging Winnipeg's Land Dedication Reserve—a city-wide fund supported through development fees—I was able to move important community projects forward sooner and enhance work already underway. Investing wisely means making every dollar works harder building on existing projects, addressing accessibility, and ensuring our parks and recreation facilities continue to serve our growing communities for years to come.

Three local projects will benefit from this approach:

Sam Southern Arena will receive $200,000 to expedite an accessible washroom upgrade, making the facility more inclusive and welcoming for residents, families and visitors who use the arena and surrounding recreation amenities throughout the year.

Earl Grey Playground will receive $110,400 to support the redevelopment of the playground, ensuring it remains safe, accessible and enjoyable for the neighbourhood families while incorporating enhancements identified through community feedback.

Wildwood Park will receive $48,000 to complement ongoing improvements at Playground 1. Combined with major drainage and sidewalk upgrades taking place this summer, the additional funding will help deliver a more complete and functional park improvement project.

Rather than delaying these enhancements, the strategic use of land dedication reserve funding allows the city to coordinate projects in partnership with my office, and potentially reduce future costs, delivering better outcomes for residents.
