In 2021, I along with the Executive Policy Committee led by Mayor Brian Bowman directed the Indigenous Relations Division to engage in consultations with Indigenous peoples to bring forward their proposal for renaming Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Grandin Street to a name that honours Indigenous experience, culture, and history.
Elders gifted a new name, a name in both Anishinaabemowin and Ininimowin. They proposed renaming Bishop Grandin Boulevard to Abinojii Mikanah, Bishop Grandin Trail to Awasisak Mēskanow, and Grandin Street to Taapweewin Way.
I look forward to supporting the renaming of Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Grandin Street,and I am more than ready for Winnipeg to take a step forward in our journey to reconciliation.
