Support for MMIWG Families and Candace House

Candace House is a not-for-profit that provides safe housing and emotional support for families experiencing loss through violent crime and attending court proceedings. Located downtown at 183 Kennedy.

Candace House delivers trauma-informed, holistic and culturally appropriate services for survivors of crime, and offers them a safe space to stay during criminal trials.

Article 3.5 of the MMIWG Calls for Justice states, “We call upon all governments to establish culturally competent and responsive crisis response teams in all communities and regions, to meet the immediate needs of an Indigenous person, family, and/or community after a traumatic event (murder, accident, violent event, etc.), alongside ongoing support.”

In line with article 3.5 from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls to Justice I granted $45,000 to Candace House through the Community Incentive Grant Program for their expansion project so they can continue to provide support for families of MMIWG and other victims of crime.

Candace House has provided temporary housing and additional support to families who are the victims of violent crime, including the families of Rebecca Contois, Morgan Harris, and Mercedes Myran.
