Working with Schools to Improve Children's Safety

Earlier this year I partnered with Green Action Centre on safe routes to schools work.  Two inner city schools need additional supports.

Gladstone School

This past month I met with the Principal from Gladstone School to discuss safety concerns in relation to traffic near the school.  Public Works Transportation advised that Gertrude Avenue between Osborne Street and Nassau Street will be assessed through the Residential Traffic Calming Program. To learn more about this program please see here:
https://www.winnipeg.ca/publicworks/trafficControl/trafficCalming/ResidentialTrafficCalming.stm

Operating speeds are high on Gertrude Ave during the hours that the 30 km/h Reduced Speed School Zone applies.  For that reason, this block of Gertrude Ave is considered a candidate location for traffic calming measures and falls high on the prioritization list.

Proceeding with designing solutions and engaging the public on safe routes to school and traffic calming is a priority.

Fort Rouge School

After consultation with the Principal of Fort Rouge and reviewing traffic study details from the Transportation department it has been decided that the south crosswalk at the intersection of River Ave and Donald St will be permanently removed due to concerns with pedestrian crossing safety.  This decision was not taken lightly there were many other countermeasures that were considered due to the fact that we did not want to have a decision that was impactful to the pedestrian network in the neighbourhood.
