Caring for your Urban Canopy

Posted on: June 17, 2021

We will be having 300 new trees planted in Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry this season.

Neighborhoods that can celebrate new plantings: Riverview, Lord Roberts, Earl Grey and McMillan with other small projects throughout the rest of the ward.

So, watch for those door knockers!

Tree Caterpillars

It is that time of year again where residents are getting in touch to advocate for spraying.  Please know, I have already reached out to Insect Control to begin to advocate on behalf of Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry.  Please continue to send our office your pictures of caterpillar activity so we can continue to advocate on your behalf.

Due to your advocacy we were able to work with Insect Control and we have already had most of the ward sprayed.

Insect Control staff are monitoring caterpillar populations and leaf damage citywide and Insect Management Areas will be prioritized based on this surveillance data.  Many residents have already contacted the office, concerned Fort Rouge East Fort Garry are last on the list based on the numbering of the Insect Management Areas (IMAs) on the map.  Rest assured this is not the case.  Those numbers do not note priority order.  They are an arbitrary number assigned to identify the area known as Insect Management Areas (IMAs).

Beaver Protection

120 – 140 trees were wrapped to protect against beaver activity along Churchill Drive.  The larger more significant trees were targeted by this effort.  Later in the season (still 2021) we plan to return to Churchill Drive and Wildwood to wrap more trees with the assistance of the Boys and Girls Club.

Grant Awarded to Trees Please Winnipeg

My office has recently provided a grant to the advocacy group Trees Please Winnipeg that will assist with covering a portion of the costs related to the creation and maintenance of their website, public outreach, communications and education (including Zoom account), research and material costs.

Youth Summer Jobs: Grant Awarded to Crescent Park Rescue

It was a real highlight of my year last year spending time with the hard-working summer students at Crescent Park and taking a tour of all they accomplished.

Summer students will be once again provided needed and important work in Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry.  In order to care for Crescent Drive Park, my office has provided a grant to Crescent Park Rescue.  This grant will assist with the cost of purchasing work equipment for eight summer students.

This was a very successful program last year, and I am happy to support Crescent Park Rescue again this year.  I can’t wait to spend time with the students and hear about their summer work.
