COVID-19 Supports for Seniors

Posted on: May 17, 2021

Since my last newsletter we have had quite a few people reach out asking how to register for their vaccination appointments and wondering if their are rides available to get you to that appointment, as well as having questions about picking up necessities so here is some additional information for you.

Need a ride to get to your COVID-19 vaccine appointment?

These are three organizations in Winnipeg that are offering rides to seniors:

  • Seniors Transport (204) 430-9851
  • Gwen Sector Medical Transport (204) 899-1696
  • Care Giving with Confidence (204) 452-9491

There is also the new 211 service that you can contact either by dialing 211 or going to this website:https://mb.211.ca

Need assistance picking up groceries or your prescriptions from the pharmacy?

Winnipeggers who find themselves in isolation, or without family or friends to help out during the COVID-19 crisis can call the city's 311 line for assistance. This includes assistance with delivery of groceries, prescription drugs or other social services.

Simply phone operators at 311 and they will register a caller’s contact information and directly transfer the caller to Age & Opportunity for Support Services for Older Adults.

The Centre will follow up with the older adult or vulnerable person, and triage their needs and connect that senior with the appropriate community resources to provide for food, hot meals, personal care items or social support.  Concerned family members may also call on a vulnerable senior’s behalf.

Thanks to the United Way Winnipeg they continue to partner with the City of Winnipeg 311 Call Centre, A&O Support Services for Older Adults, CAA, The Winnipeg Foundation and community organizations serving older adults to utilize 311 as a simple point of contact for vulnerable seniors (55+) needing access to healthy food and a daily wellness check.

The Centre on Aging has put together some community resources and practical information for older persons in the community as it relates to COVID-19 from information published on social media and in the news. This is a great source with city-wide information.
