Celebrating Housing West Broadway Commons

“What truly is highest and best use for land? If we care about society, we must broaden the definition from ROI to social development…and happier social outcome(s).”
- Sandi Mielitz, All Saints Anglican on behalf of the West Broadway Commons Joint Venture

At the celebration of the 12 story new building and $25.6 million federal announcement for the West Broadway Commons the excavator never stopped working. No time was wasted in getting the 110 units, 56 affordable, and the 33 accessible units and all common areas constructed in keeping with universal design standards.

Encouraging production of new affordable housing, including selling city owned lots for development less than market housing and much more.  There is more to do but modest successes towards these ends includes;

  1. The city supports and funds End Homelessness to foster collaboration between social service agencies, coordinate the extreme weather shelter response, and track our progress as a city against the mandate they have been given.
  2. The City of Winnipeg’s Housing Rehabilitation Investment Reserve’s Downtown Housing Program detailed in a Housing Policy. (The West Broadway Commons project included an investment of $250,000 through this program).
  3. A Housing Steering Committee will encourage, revitalize, enable, and establish Housing Policy with partners and other governments.  It hears reports from the public service on its work with partners, and is tasked with contemplating new work such as implementation of inclusionary zoning.
